Fourteen year old Rachelle Breval is concerned about the situation in Haiti. There are things going on in Haiti that she has not seen for herself but she has heard her mother complain of such as murder, stealing, and violence. Rachelle wants there to be peace in her country, especially in Dumay.

Rachelle's greatest wish is to be taken care of. She lives a hard life, waking up at 5:00 in the morning to do the dishes, sweep the floor, and prepare a meal before school. After school, Rachelle gets home and does her lessons. Then she goes to bed at 7:00 p.m.

Rachelle's family has no electricity so they have to work in accordance with the sun.

When Rachelle gets out of school she hopes to become a nurse. Until then, she resides with four younger brothers and one younger sister, her mother, and her uncle in a small Haitian village where she doesn't feel safe.
