EINSTEIN ALBERT

Einstein Albert is one of the premier wood craftsmen of Haiti, hand carving and finishing a wide variety of bowls and platters. His workshop is located in Mariani, on the eastern edge of Port-au-Prince. Albert uses the wood from the obeechi tree for his bowls and has a plantation of 22,000 trees to sustain his enterprise. “Obeechi is a soft wood,” he explains, “so it can’t be used for charcoal.” It is also a fast growing tree that makes it ideal for soil reclamation and redeeming the deforested hillsides that afflict so many people with mudslides, flooding, and erosion. Albert’s woodworking skill in crafting bowls has found outlets in such high-end retailers as Nieman Marcus and all his pieces use food-safe finishes.

HILOME JOSE

Hilome Jose was born in 1947 in the town of Jeremie on the southwestern tip of Haiti.  He moved to Port-au-Prince in the late 1960's and worked as a carpenter.  Through a mutual friend he made the acquaintance of the Haitian master Calixe Henry, under who he studied.  Now one of Haiti's most respected modern painters, he is a journeyman knife painter with a distinctive style. His use of color and lines depict peasant life in Haiti.

His work is included in many private art collections worldwide. Hilome is listed in Haiti Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera by John Allen Franciscus. And illustration of his art can be seen in the book, Les Naifs Haitiennes – An introduction To Haitian Art and History by Madame Shishi., and in Eva Pataki's book, Haitian Painting Art and Kitsch.

Paintings similar to those in this year’s auction can be found on sale over the Internet for between $300 and $400.
