Goals for 2011 |
A summary of HAM’s
efforts in 2010 following the horrific earthquake that demolished Port-au-Prince and
wreaked havoc on the already suffering population of Haiti, can be found in our annual report sent to our supporters (download a copy by clicking here). The
hard work of our Haitian staff and U.S. volunteers, along with the support of
our generous donors in 2010 produced important successes we can all be proud
of. 2011 offers us a wonderful opportunity to build upon those successes,
allowing us to make an even greater impact improving the situation of the
Haitian people.
We have laid out HAM’s 2011 goals in expanding our
services in support of the Haitian people below. However, it is important to
point out that our funding priority will be the continuation of our two flagship
projects; providing accessible primary health care to the Dumay community, and
funding teachers salaries at the Hope for the Children of Haiti School in
Port-au-Paix. We will only be able to meet the goals listed below with
increased funding above and beyond the needs of the basic operating costs of
our major programs.
HAM’s goals for the New Year are as follows:
- We shall continue to keep the Dumay clinic open 24/7 to
treat anyone suspected to have cholera as long as the epidemic continues to
majorly impact the community of Dumay. The expanded staffing required to keep
the clinic open continuous hours is costing HAM an additional $2,000 USD per
month. Additionally, we are currently attempting to acquire a large tent to
place in the yard of the clinic in order to be able to isolate cholera patients
from the regular operations of the clinic.
- Completion of construction of the security wall around
the Dumay clinic, exterior patient access to the pharmacy, and the volunteer
sleeping porch. These projects were all begun in 2010 and have been mostly paid
for.
- Expansion of laboratory services at the Dumay clinic
with inclusion of a microscope and centrifuge, which have been donated and are
being transported to the clinic in January. We hope to recruit and hire a
trained Haitian lab technician to run the laboratory.
- Acquire necessary equipment to offer a monthly eye
clinic at the Dumay clinic. We already have a staff member to run the clinic,
Jean Herard Charles, who was trained by Dr. Janine Flood and ran HAM’s eye
clinic at the Bethel clinic prior to our being forced out of that facility. Unfortunately,
all the eye equipment has remained under lock and key at Bethel and unavailable
to us, so we must now replace it. We have reserved an existing room at the
clinic specifically for this purpose.
- Creation of a minor surgical suite at the Dumay clinic.
Our Haitian medical director, Dr. Jean Fritz Jacques, is a trained surgeon and
with a properly equipped facility he could be performing an expanded offering
of procedures to the Dumay community at little to additional cost to the
patients. We have reserved an existing room at the clinic specifically for this
purpose.
-
Recruit and hire better
educated and trained teachers for the Hope for the Children of Haiti School,
and continue to add a new grade level at the beginning of each new school year.
